Beef Tallow for Skin: A Guide to Tallow Moisturizers
Beef Tallow for Skin: A Guide to Tallow Moisturizers
Beef tallow for skin starts with a simple idea: using rendered beef fat as a moisturizing ingredient. At Greene Grass Tallow, we turn locally sourced Wisconsin suet into whipped body butters with whole ingredients. Here is what to know before choosing your first jar.
What is beef tallow?
Tallow is beef fat that has been rendered: gently heated to separate the fat from surrounding tissue, then strained. It firms up as it cools. Suet is the fat found around the kidneys, and it is the starting ingredient we use in our Wisconsin family business.
Plain tallow and a finished tallow body butter are different products. Our whipped body butters combine rendered tallow with ingredients such as olive oil, shea butter, honey, and whole botanical infusions, depending on the blend. Read each product’s ingredient list to see exactly what is inside.
What does tallow do for skin?
Tallow can act as a rich moisturizer, helping soften dry skin and reduce moisture loss. Its fatty texture is part of what gives tallow balms and body butters their substantial feel.
How we make our Wisconsin tallow skincare
Our work starts before the ingredients reach the mixing bowl.
- Local Wisconsin suet. We source beef suet from local family farms.
- Rendered by our family. We handle the rendering ourselves, taking time to prepare the tallow before blending.
- Whole-ingredient infusions. Depending on the blend, we use ingredients such as vanilla beans, flowers, coffee, spices, or frankincense resin.
- Blended and whipped. We combine the ingredients into a creamy body butter, then fill our jars.
Our body butters contain no added essential oils, synthetic fragrance, water fillers, or preservatives. The scents come from the ingredients themselves. Naturally scented still means scented, so choosing ingredients you tolerate matters.
We make these products with the care we wanted for our own family, at prices intended for everyday use.
How to use a tallow body butter
Follow the directions on your chosen product. Start with a small amount, warm it between your fingertips, and spread a thin layer over clean skin. Add a little more only if needed.
Try a small area first before applying a new product more widely. Stop using it if irritation develops. Use clean, dry hands or a clean, dry scoop, keep water out of the jar, and follow the product’s storage instructions.
Choosing your first blend

Common questions
Can I use your tallow moisturizer on my face?
Our four core blends are made with facial moisturizing in mind. Check the individual product’s directions and ingredients, and start with a small amount.
Does “no essential oils” mean fragrance-free?
No. Whole ingredients can contribute scent and can still cause sensitivities. Our body butters have no added essential oils or synthetic fragrance, but they are naturally scented.
Is tallow body butter the same as cooking tallow?
No. Our body butters are skincare blends. Choose our separate cooking tallow product for culinary use.
